PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Wells Guthrie honed his craft in France and spent much of his career at Copain Vineyards, where he was instrumental in helping the estate cement its reputation as a world-class winery for pinot noir lovers. After 20 years there, he realized a long-standing dream of moving to the Anderson Valley in Mendocino. His mountain estate, situated high above Boonville, has seven acres planted to pinot noir; he aims to "elevate the greatness that exists in this valley." To this end, he takes a non-interventionist approach to winemaking and lets the terroir do most of the work. He does not use new oak barrels in order to preserve purity of fruit and the unique qualities of his land.
Today's wine is sourced from the Wendling Vineyard, the last vineyard in the deep end of the valley, where the low-vigor soils produce small, ultra-ripe, and concentrated berries. The finished wine deftly balances fruit and terroir-driven characters with balancing acidity. Check out the press!
95 points and Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Subtle yet structured, this medium-bodied wine comes from the second vintage of Wells Guthrie's new winery DuPuis in Anderson Valley. It seems restrained and mineral-ish at first sniff, then opens up on the palate to offer captivating plum, raspberry, and black-tea flavors wrapped in moderate fine-grained tannins. Light oak notes of ginger and toast accent the creamy, fruity center." (7/1/22)
