Introduction:
Celler Vall Llach was founded in the village of Porrera in the early 1990s by winemaker Enric Costa and the legendary Catalan singer-songwriter Lluís Llach, producing their first vintage in 1998. Today, it stands as one of Priorat's most respected and emblematic estates, its wines drawing on the region's extraordinary "licorella" slate soils and extreme hillside terroir. Embruix, Catalan for "bewitchment", is the estate's entry-level wine and gateway to the Vall Llach universe, sourced from younger estate vines and crafted to deliver an approachable yet genuinely Priorat expression.
Terroir:
The Embruix draws from 7-to-25-year-old vines grown on Porrera's defining licorella soils - the reddish-black slate that is Priorat's calling card, forcing vine roots deep into the fractured rock to find water and minerals. The result is dramatic concentration, a characteristic graphite-edged minerality, and the structure to age. The steep, terraced slopes of the appellation limit yields naturally and amplify the expression of this ancient landscape.
Tasting notes:
The 2023 Celler Vall Llach Embruix has aromas of ripe black cherries, blackberries, plums, and dark chocolate, with notes of graphite, Mediterranean herbs, and a smoky mineral note that is a nod to the licorella terroir. The palate is full-bodied and robust, with concentrated flavors of blackcurrants, blueberries, black cherries, and figs, with firm, well-integrated tannins and balancing, fresh acidity. The 14 months in seasoned French oak barriques add toasted spice and vanilla without overpowering the wine's inherent minerality. The finish is long, with notes of black fruits, chocolate, baking spices, and wet stone.
Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-roasted suckling pig, or a hearty Catalan-style beef stew.
🥦 Vegetarian: Black truffle pasta, roasted root vegetables with romesco, or a rich wild mushroom and lentil ragù.
