Fitou is a relatively small AOC that consists of two finger-like extensions into the larger and more well-known appellation of Corbières. One is very close to the Mediterranean Sea, while is other is located inland and has a much higher elevation. As a whole, Fitou has similar characteristics of terroir to Corbières - mountain and ocean influences, abundant sunshine, and well-drained soils - and is also planted to varietals found in the southern Rhône: Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre.
Today’s offer is an estate wine crafted by Mont Tauch, a cooperative with 1500 hectares of vineyards located in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon that has been making wines from Corbières and Fitou as well as Vin de Pays for over 100 years. Château de Montmal is a new and sustainably produced Fitou from the village of Villeneuve-les-Corbières which, together with Paziols and Tuchan is one of the three villages to produce Fitou at Mont Tauch.*
Aged in new French oak for 12 months in order to add weight and depth, the 2018 Château de Montmal Fitou is a blend of grenache, carignan, and syrah that is complex and satisfying. It has an inviting nose of blackberries and savory herbs that lead to a full-bodied palate of cassis and black cherries layered with wet stone and herbs de Provence, with subtle hints of vanilla, tobacco, and woodsmoke emerging on the long finish.
