Pomerol in Bordeaux's Right Bank is one of the world's most highly regarded wine regions, home of classic properties such as Châteaux Petrus, Lafleur, & Le Pin. Its unique terroir brings forth silky-smooth, well-structured wines with depth and complexity. Pomerol also happens to be the place where Merlot reaches its apogee. Here, winemakers let the terroir do the talking and see themselves as guides rather than the driving force behind their wines. The results are stellar; such is the case with today's offer!
Château de Sales is located in the north-west of the Pomerol appellation. With 47.6 hectares (117 acres) under vine, it is the largest vineyard in the Pomerol appellation. The majority of vines are merlot (73%), which, combined with cabernet sauvignon (15%) and cabernet franc (12%), finds its full expression in a terroir of clay, gravel, and heat-retaining sand.*

The 2020 Château de Sales is a blend of 79% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc aged in a combination of 18% new and 82% seasoned oak barrels. It has seductive aromas of black cherries, violets, and vanilla. Richly flavored and remarkably well-balanced, it has flavors of ripe blackberries and cassis laced with subtle notes of baking spices. The ample mid-palate is sustained by the caress of refined, silky tannins that lead to a long and elegant finish.

"A full and juicy red with blackberry, black olive, dark chocolate, and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Creamy, round and deliciously textured...it is seductive in so many ways. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2026."

"Dominant Merlot in the blend gives this wine both its richness and its smooth texture. Black fruits and generous acidity are sure to develop well. Drink this fine wine from 2026."
92 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"I loved the 2020 Château De Sales from barrel, and it's showing beautifully from bottle. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a ripe, sexy, medium- to full-bodied style, it has ripe, supple tannins, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, and classic aromatics of ripe black cherries, plums, licorice, spring flowers, and damp earth. It's another beautiful, layered, elegant Pomerol in the vintage that will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly through 2040."
