Frog's Leap proprietor John Williams has an impressive winemaking resume dating back over 40 years, cutting his teeth at Stag's Leap and Spring Mountain Wineries before striking out on his own. His reverence for the old-school wines of Inglenook and Beaulieu Estates led him to Rutherford, where the well-drained alluvial soils and famed "Rutherford dust" provide the building blocks for transcendent, terroir-driven wines with distinctive earthiness and fine tannic structure.

His purchase of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994, followed by a partnership with the owners of Chavez Leeds Vineyard and the acquisition of the historic Rossi Vineyard in Rutherford Bench, set the stage for Frog's Leap to follow in the footsteps of these iconic wineries. The 2022 Frog's Leap Rutherford Cabernet is a testament to passion and superior craftsmanship as well as an idyllic marriage of grape varietals and terroir.

Sourced from the Chavez-Leeds, Williams-Rossi, and Red Barn Vineyards, blended with 6.4% Cabernet Franc, and aged for 20 months in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels, the 2021 Frog's Leap Winery Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford has aromas of raspberries, blackberries, and black cherries entwined with accents of  dried violets, cedar, tobacco, and sage. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, with flavors of plums, blackberries, and cassis layered with accents of vanilla, baking spices, and dusty earthiness that is the hallmark of Rutherford Cabernets. Bright acidity and firm but pliant tannins give balance and structure and extend the wine's drinkability over the next ten years.

"Sourced from dry-farmed vines in Rutherford, this wine underwent natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. It was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels ranging from new to five years old, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The bold, muscular aromatics showcase licorice, black olive, saddle leather, loamy earth, and pressed flowers. Full-bodied on the palate, it offers velvety tannins and an abundance of crunchy dark berry and currant character layered with graphite. The tannins build with a dusty mineral quality, carrying through to a long, balanced finish. A robust and nuanced expression of Rutherford terroir."
