Val di Suga was established 1969 with the purchase of land north of the town of Montalcino. The estate began making wine in its own cellars in 1982 and quickly established itself as one of the region's premier producers. However, it was the acquisition of the Poggio al Granchio vineyard, situated in the heart of the appellation, that truly gave the estate legendary status. This 44-acre vineyard, situated in the southeastern part of the appellation, sits 1300-1500 feet above sea level, with soils made from galestro schist, wide diurnal temperature variations, and excellent sun exposure.
