The Zuccardi family is one of the preeminent winemaking dynasties in Argentina. Starting with the establishment of their winery in Maipú, Mendoza, Bodega Santa Julia, the family has been a pioneer in the craftsmanship of sustainable wines that are pure expressions of Mendoza terroir. Over the years, they expanded with the purchase of vineyards in Mendoza’s prized Uco Valley and the opening of their namesake winery there. Third generation winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi is currently at the helm and has brought the family accolades too numerous to count here, including World’s Best Winery.*
The Zuccardis’ ‘Q’ line of wines was first made in 1999 and was the first to bear the family name. These wines are made from grapes sourced from select plots throughout Mendoza that reflect the region’s diversity; the letter Q (for quality) was traditionally used to indicate which plots would be selected for the final blend.
Deep purple color with bluish reflections, the 2019 Zuccardi Q Malbec has intense aromas of red and black fruit and cassis, raisins, dried figs and blueberry jam. The aging in French oak brings notes of snuff and chocolate. It is a big wine yet is soft and silky, with sweet and firm tannins and a long finish.
James Suckling: 94 Points
"Lots of tar to the blackberry and dark-fruit aromas here. Wet earth, too. It’s full-bodied and layered with juicy, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Rich and intense. Structured and powerful."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 92 Points
"The 2019 Q Malbec is a step up after coming from the Serie A Malbec. This is more specific about the origin, which is Valle de Uco, but they select grapes from Paraje Altamira and Los Chacayes for this bottling, where the soils start to deliver some chalky minerality in the wines. There is contained ripeness and fully developed flavors and aromas. It's medium to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins. It matured in concrete and 30% in 500-liter oak barrels.”
Decanter: 92 Points
"From selected high-altitude vineyard parcels in Paraje Altamira (1,100m) and Los Chacayes (1,000m), aged in a mix of concrete and oak. Black cherry, blackberries, spice, and an edge of violet on the nose. Fresh and appealing, with a core of ripe dark fruit framed by finely tailored tannins, with a long, spicy finish."
Wine Spectator: 91 Points
"This rich red offers a deep well of cherry, dark plum, and wild herb flavors that are matched to crisp acidity. Lots of flinty accents midpalate lead to a finish that lingers with cedar and slate. Drink now through 2024."
