Established in 1982 by Fred Cline, Cline Cellars is a family-owned winery with humble beginnings in Oakley, Contra Costa County. Over the years, as the business has grown, the Clines acquired vineyards throughout northern California and moved their winery from Oakley to Sonoma. Driven by a desire to produce wines of the highest quality while being stewards of the land, the Clines farm their vineyards sustainably, with a commitment to preserving ecological balance and our natural resources.
The 2018 Cline Viognier is sourced from four Sonoma Coast estate vineyards, three of which are situated in the cool, fog-shrouded area of east Petaluma. The fourth is located in the Sonoma Carneros region on a hillside behind the winery. A combination of volcanic and loamy soils and days of early morning fog with warm afternoons provide ideal conditions for growing Viognier. *
The grapes for today's wine were hand-harvested in the morning to retain freshness. Half the juice was fermented in neutral French oak barrels while the balance was fermented in stainless steel tanks. A combination of indigenous and pure strain yeasts was used for fermentation and the wine underwent 50% malolactic fermentation. (Malolactic adds richness and body but stopping it early keeps the wine fresh and lively.)*
The 2018 Cline Viognier offers distinct aromas of peach, pear, apricot, orange blossom, and honeysuckle that follow through on the full, lushly-textured palate. Moderate acidity on the finish balances out the abundant fruit characters.
