Bianco di Custoza (or simply Custoza), is a white DOC wine from the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. Travelers to Italy's Veneto region, and Verona in particular, will certainly have enjoyed a glass or two of Custoza as the wine is ubiquitous in the cafés and restaurants that line Verona's historic squares.
Roberto Bricolo established Gorgo in 1973 with 22 hectares. Today he has over 60 hectares, almost all part of the “Bianco di Custoza” and “Bardolino” DOCs. He now runs the estate with his daughter and chief winemaker, Roberta.*
Gorgo's wines are fresh, authentic representations of the region and have been widely recognized by Gambero Rosso as well as the rest of the Italian wine press. Gorgo sits on glacial moraine just southeast of Lake Garda, near the village of Custoza. The lightly textured soil consists of rock fragments, pebbles, humus, and silt rich in calcium carbonate. The certified organic vineyards are managed using traditional local methods, including the use of organic fertilizers and hand-harvesting, which can take up to 45 days.*
This dry white is a blend of Italian varietals, each contributing distinguishing features to the finished wine: Trebbiano Toscano (or Castelli Romani locally) imparts vigor and contributes to the wine’s body; Cortese (or Bianca Fernanda locally) adds acidity and freshness; Garganega and Tocai Friulano add stone fruits and aromatics.
The 2025 Gorgo Bianco di Custoza has aromas of pears, honeysuckle, lemon zest, white peaches, and white flowers. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, with flavors of Pink Lady apples, green apples, peaches, and lemon zest. Balanced acidity supports the wine's fruit-driven profile, while mineral notes add depth and complexity. The finish is clean and refreshing, with lingering citrus and almond notes and subtle hints of salinity.
