Located in the town of Gaioli in the southern part of Chianti Classico, this historic, medieval estate has been owned by the Martini di Cigala family since 1914. Today the property encompasses 160 hectares, of which 30.5 are planted to vines. The estate benefits from a unique microclimate marked by a dramatic fluctuation between day and night temperatures which allows the Sangiovese grape to reach peak maturity while maintaining proper acidity.
The estate is currently managed by the current generation Elisabetta, Francesco, and Luca, with the help of enologist Attilio Pagli and agronomist Ruggero Mazzilli. Under the direction of this team, San Giusto A Rentennano is today widely recognized as among the top "Grand Cru" estates of Chianti Classico. The 2016 vintage (long sold out nearly a year ago) was rated #3 on the Wine Spectator "Top-100" list for 2019. While the Spectator has not yet reviewed the similar 2017 vintage, other notable wine critics have been quick to lavish praise on today's featured wine. Check it out!
93 points, James Suckling:
"The purity of fruit with cherries and raspberries, as well as mineral character, is so wonderful in this Chianti Classico. Medium body. Balanced and nicely fruity with fresh, firm tannins. All here. Drink or hold." (7/25/19)
92 points, Vinous:
"The 2017 Chianti Classico is rich, ample and beautifully textured, with all of the natural richness of the year on display. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, and licorice infuse a decidedly dark, brooding Chianti Classico. A dollop of whole clusters adds freshness and perfume, but readers should expect a big, potent Chianti Classico with serious fruit intensity as well as structure. I would prefer to cellar the 2017 to allow some of the baby fat to melt away." (8/19)
91 points, Wine Advocate:
"The 2017 Chianti Classico (made with 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo) is a saturated and rich red wine with a terrific sense of life and vitality. The quality of fruit is polished, delineated and sharp. Red and purple berry aromas mingle with light toast, spice, and crushed limestone. This wine boasts beautiful primary fruit and makes every effort to flaunt it. The tannins are present, you won't forget them, but there is enough texture and succulence to wash over any leftover sharpness or astringency. Serve it with an appetizer of meatballs and rosemary focaccia." (9/19)
