PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Domaine de Piaugier is situated in the village of Sablet, in the southern Rhône valley. Sablet is its own AOC in the Côtes du Rhône-Villages appellation; its 300 hectares (740 acres) of vineyards are characterized by sandy soils that give the village and the appellation their names, as sable is the French word for sand.*

Red Sablet wines must include at least 40% grenache, and a minimum of 25% of syrah and/or mourvèdre.*
Domaine de Piaugier's proprietor Jean-Marc Autran, whose father and grandfather before him were winemakers, and his wife, Sophie, cultivate 30 hectares of vines in Sablet as well as Gigondas. From vinification right through to bottling, the wines are made in the cellars built by Jean-Marc’s great-grandfather in 1947. The dominant grape variety in the red wines is the traditional grenache, with syrah and mourvèdre acting as supporting players. Organic viticulture is practiced at Domaine du Piaugier.*

Today's wine is a blend of 80% grenache and 20% syrah sourced from vines that average 25 years in age. Fermented and aged in a combination of concrete and seasoned barriques, it has aromas of brambly red and black fruits and flavors of ripe blackberries, black raspberries, and plums with accents of underbrush and savory herbs. The medium-to-full-bodied palate is laced with bright acidity, and a subtle hint of woodsmoke appears on the long finish.
