Introduction: R. López de Heredia is the oldest winery in Haro and one of the three founding producers of the Rioja region, established in 1877 and now one of the most singular wine estates in the world. In an era of technological modernization and consultant-driven style, López de Heredia has changed almost nothing — still fermenting exclusively with natural yeasts, crafting its own barrels in its on-site cooperage, filtering nothing, releasing wines only when the family judges them ready, and aging in wood for six to eight years as a matter of routine rather than exception. The estate is led today by María José López de Heredia, the fourth generation, and the Viña Tondonia Reserva is the estate's most iconic wine — the fullest and longest-aging expression of the Tondonia vineyard, released as a Reserva only after an aging process that would qualify most competitors' wines for Gran Reserva status.

Terroir: The Viña Tondonia vineyard occupies a meander of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta — a south-facing, horseshoe-shaped bend in the river that creates a naturally protected microclimate uniquely suited to slow, even ripening. The calcareous clay soils on the riverbank, combined with the Ebro's moderating influence and the altitude of the surrounding Rioja Alta, produce Tempranillo of exceptional structure, acidity, and aging potential. The 2012 vintage was a dry year with 25% less rainfall than average, yielding lower volumes of very healthy, concentrated grapes with excellent balance between alcohol and polyphenols — ideal conditions, as the winery notes, for the extended barrel aging this wine demands. The result was a slightly longer élevage of six years in barrel, compared to the standard four to five.

Appearance: Lucid garnet-ruby with a very slight amber bricking at the rim — vivid and translucent, the characteristic López de Heredia color that signals both quality and the effect of long, slow oxidative development.

Nose: Gloriously open, perfumed, and fine — jamón serrano, cured leather, and cedar open the bouquet, with raspberry tea, red cherry compote, ash, brick dust, and iodine layering in as the wine breathes. Crushed raspberry, dried cranberry, plum skin, and dried red currant provide the fruit framework, while cigar box, cured tobacco, forest floor, and baking spice weave through a bouquet of extraordinary nuance and complexity. A touch of musky cedar spice and a mineral purity that is unmistakably Tondonia thread through the whole.

Palate: Incredibly fresh for a wine of this age — red fruit, vibrating orange zest, and iron-tinged mineral drive a palate of remarkable poise and energy. The texture is silky and assertive at once, with polished chalky tannins providing structure without weight, and a lively, focused acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. The 2012 is described by Berry Bros. & Rudd as "more accessible and less dense" than prior vintages — reminiscent of the 2009 in its charm — while delivering the classic Tondonia savory complexity: leather, tobacco, blood orange, and earth built on a core of juicy red fruit.

Finish: Long, dry, and sustained — savory herbs, cedar, iron, and the wine's characteristic smoky minerality fading gradually through a compact, structured close that lingers remarkably. The finish is consistently cited as one of the wine's most impressive qualities across every tasting note.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Roasted suckling lamb (lechazo asado), cured Iberian ham, or slow-braised oxtail with vegetables
🥦 Vegetarian: Roasted red pepper and walnut romesco on toasted bread, a Rioja-style bean stew with piquillo peppers, or mushroom croquetas
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Manchego, Idiazabal, jamón Ibérico de bellota, quince paste, and Marcona almonds

Overall Impression: The 2012 Viña Tondonia Tinto Reserva is, in the words of Berry Bros. & Rudd, "a textbook Tondonia" — and that is the highest possible praise for a wine whose house style is itself among the most distinctive and consistent in the world. Six years in barrel, three in bottle before release, and still requiring patience to fully reveal its depth: this is old-school Rioja of unrivalled authenticity, produced at 250,000 bottles while maintaining a quality level that shames many producers working at a fraction of the scale. Drink now through 2035; best from 2026. Serve at 63–65°F with at least 30–60 minutes of decanting.
