Introduction:
The 2023 Domaine du Mont Verrier Morgon “Janin” is an expressive Beaujolais Cru red that brings sophistication and energy. With fruit-forward elegance and structural depth, it offers both immediate appeal and a promise for further evolution.

Terroir:
Sourced from the “Janin” climat in the Morgon appellation of the Beaujolais region. The vineyards sit on granite and schist soils characteristic of Beaujolais’s cru terroirs, contributing to the wine’s mineral lift and depth of character. The site benefits from good exposure, warmth, and a slight cooling effect from elevation, lending both ripeness and freshness.

Appearance:
The wine pours a vivid ruby‑garnet hue with violet tinges on the rim—indicative of ripe dark fruit and a youthful structure.

Nose:
Aromas burst with black cherry, blackberry compote and raspberry, alongside hints of violet petal, forest floor, and a touch of graphite/mineral note. There’s subtle spice—black pepper, clove—and an underlying earthiness that adds intrigue.

Palate:
The palate is medium‑full yet agile, delivering rich dark fruit—black cherry, bramble, fresh plum—balanced by vibrant acidity and fine‑grained tannins. The mineral core and spice accents (white pepper, dried herb) provide lift, while the texture is smooth and precise. The finish is long with fruit echoing and a slightly chalky, stony tail.

Finish:
Lingering flavors of dark berry, herbaceous garrigue and subtle mineral residue linger into the finish. Tannins are present but polished, and the acidity ensures the wine remains fresh rather than heavy.

Overall Impression:
This 2023 Morgon “Janin” is a standout—combining the charm of Beaujolais fruit with the structure and terroir expression normally associated with more premium wines. It’s both enjoyable now and worthy of short‑term aging (3‑6 years) to reveal more depth and complexity. A compelling choice for those seeking a cru Beaujolais that offers richness without losing its elegance.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

  • Meat dish: Herb‑crusted roast pork tenderloin with a wild mushroom ragù – the wine’s dark fruit and gentle spice will harmonize beautifully.

  • Vegetarian option: Grilled portobello steaks with balsamic glaze and wilted spinach, or lentil and roasted beet salad with toasted walnuts – the earthy, savory flavors will echo the wine’s mineral depth.

  • Cheese pairing: Semi‑soft Morbier or a moderately aged Comté – the wine’s rich berry fruit and moderate tannins support the nutty creaminess of the cheese.

97 points, Best in Show, 2025 World Wine Awards, Decanter:
"After the success of two Beaujolais Cru wines for the first time in last year’s Best in Show, we were curious to see if this year’s competition brought new candidates … and it did. The wine that emerged on top this year was, once again, a Morgon: not always the deepest of the Crus but rarely the lightest either, and a zone whose differing soils and slopes seem to bring gamay unique levels of fruited energy and definition. This dark Cru wine is ultra-fresh and combines black cherry notes with deep, meaty depths. On the palate, the wine is voluminous yet enticing, with very soft, accessible tannins; sappy freshness and vivid fruit, though, give it impact and strike. The meatier depths bode well, too, for further bottle maturation."
