PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The Vajra family has been farming in Piedmont since the 1880s, but it was Aldo Vajra's determination and commitment that made the estate a formidable player in Piedmont. He took over the family operation in 1968; since then he has obtained organic certification for his vineyards and winery and led the efforts to revitalize the almost extinct freisa varietal. He has increased the family holdings to 40 hectares of vineyards and adheres to traditional winemaking methods because he believes that they result in purer expressions of grape and terroir. We can't argue; everything we have tried from his portfolio of wines has been nothing short of stunning.
The Rosabella Rosato is made in the "saignée" method: Saignée is a French term that means “to bleed.” In terms of winemaking, that's a reference to the act of “bleeding off” juice from a tank of red grape juice that is just beginning to ferment, before the juice has fully extracted the color and tannins from the grape skins (that happens later, during maceration). The Saignée method serves two purposes: Not only is it used to produce rosé wine, but it also serves to concentrate the remaining juice that is left behind, which is made into red wine. The 2024 G.D Vajra Rosabella Rosato is crafted from 90% nebbiolo, with the remaining 10% dolcetto and barbera. This peach-pink beauty has aromas of orange blossoms, blood oranges, peaches, fresh strawberries, and subtle hints of baking spices that follow on the palate. The finish is long and zesty, with hints of apples and white pepper. (from winery notes)
