Jed Steele made California wines from the world's most sought after grapes, and while his immense talents were on display with every one of his wines, his favorite was Chardonnay. He loved the way this Burgundian varietal expressed itself in California's many terroirs. His Chardonnays, more than any of his wines, helped to put California on the world wine stage.
Jed became enamored with Lake County and the appellations within its boundaries. Its high elevation, volcanic soils with excellent drainage, and cooling influences from Clear Lake made incredible wines, and he believed that he could make lake County Chardonnays that were at once opulent and elegant. Jed sadly passed away in 2025, but thanks to Shannon Family of Wines, who purchased his winery a few years ago, you have the opportunity to purchase one of his last Chardonnays, a Lake County beauty with a price tag that can't be beat!
The 2023 Steele "Cuvée" Chardonnay was sourced from vineyards in the Red Hills and Big Valley District AVAs. Barrel-fermented and aged on the lees for 8 months, it has aromas and flavors of mangos, papayas, and pineapples laced with lemon and lime zest. The palate is rich and lushly-textured yet infused with bright, citrusy acidity. Tropical and citrus fruit notes linger on the juicy finish.
