2015 was a spectacular vintage in Bordeaux, with press ratings ranging from 94 to 99 points. It seems that every château, from tiny Cru Bourgeois producer to Grand Cru Classé legend, was at the top of its game. Everything we tried from 2015 was nothing short of outstanding, so you can only imagine how excited we are about this afternoon's pre-arrival offer: a highly rated, cellar-worthy magnum of classic Médoc juice at an incredible price!
Château Potensac takes its name from its location, which is on the top of the Potensac Plateau in the northern part of the Médoc. The estate dates back to the mid-1800s when it was owned by the Liquard family. Today, Château Potensac is owned by the Delon family, who also own Leoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien and Château Nenin in Pomerol.*
Château Potensac's 60 hectares of vineyards extend over hills with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel outcrops containing a high proportion of gravel ("graves"). These soils are very similar to those found in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. On this very special terroir, some plots of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc planted over 80 years ago still produce perfectly ripe, healthy grapes.**
The 2015 Château Potensac Médoc is a blend of 38% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot, and 17% cabernet franc aged for 14 months in seasoned French oak barrels. A fine wine with glorious aromas, tight texture, great richness, and wonderful freshness, it is pure and powerful on the palate, with dense and spicy tannins and a finish of great depth. Because of these qualities, Château Potensac is often considered to represent the "pure Médoc style". It should be noted that Potensac was the only "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel" of its appellation.***
Press:
92 points, Decanter:
"One might have expected Potensac to have produced an intimidating wine in this fine vintage, but it’s actually quite accessible and fluid. The nose is sweet and ripe, with elegant cherry and blackcurrant aromas. The tannins are firm but ripe, giving grip, but there’s complexity and spice too. Assertive and long."
92 points, James Suckling:
"A clarity and transparency to this pretty red with currant, lemon-peel, and lemon-grass character. Full body, very fine tannins, and a pretty texture. Precise wine. Drink or hold."
Order the 2015 Château Potensac Médoc Magnums between now and Wednesday, August 27th, at 5 PM. Orders will be ready for pickup on Friday, August 29th, after 5 PM.
