Introduction: Cellers Can Blau was founded in 2003 by the Gil Family Estates in El Molar, Catalonia — a solar-powered, dry-farmed estate that has become one of D.O. Montsant's benchmark names. The "Can Blau" sits at the center of the three-wine lineup, aged 9–12 months in new French oak, and is built around old-vine Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah grown in the region's characteristically diverse soils.

Terroir: The estate's 99 acres of vineyards climb the Sierra de Montsant at approximately 2,000 feet, where each variety is matched to its optimal soil: Carignan in sandy clay, Grenache in the coveted slate llicorella, and Syrah in limestone. A Mediterranean climate with continental influence — dry summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variation — produces slow, even ripening and wines of genuine structure and mineral depth.

Appearance: Deep, dark cherry with a garnet-tinged rim — concentrated and youthful in the glass.

Nose: Dark fruit-forward and layered — ripe blackberry, cherry, and plum open the bouquet, followed by licorice, dried herbs, toasted oak, and cocoa. A balsamic, spicy quality from the Carignan backbone threads through the aromatics, with the llicorella-grown Grenache contributing a subtle stony minerality beneath.

Palate: Medium-to-full-bodied and forward — ripe dark fruit carried on marked but polished tannins, with a balsamic, spicy mid-palate character that is distinctly Montsant. Carignan's natural acidity provides structural backbone and keeps the wine focused, while Grenache adds aromatic breadth and Syrah a peppery, meaty depth. Long, mineral, and complex throughout.

Finish: Long, spicy, and persistent — dark fruit, bitter cocoa, and stony mineral notes sustaining a structured, mouthwatering close. Fine, grippy tannins linger invitingly.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Grilled lamb chops with romesco, slow-braised short ribs with Catalan picada, or roasted duck with dried fruit sauce
🥦 Vegetarian: Roasted mushroom and eggplant escalivada, lentil stew with smoked paprika, or a hearty tomato-braised white bean stew
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Manchego, Idiazabal, Spanish chorizo, quince paste, and Marcona almonds

Overall Impression: The 2022 Can Blau is a textbook expression of what Montsant does best — old-vine Carignan and Garnacha from diverse hillside terroirs delivering genuine Priorat-adjacent complexity at a fraction of the price. Dry-farmed, solar-powered, and built with real discipline, it is one of the most honest values in Spanish red wine. Decant for 20–30 minutes; drink now through 2028. Serve at 61–64°F.
