Castello di Castellengo is a centuries-old estate located in Alto Piemonte, 90 miles northeast of Alba in the foothills of the Alps. The region's high altitude brings forth highly aromatic wines that are more approachable in their youth than those coming from neighboring regions to the south. Alto Piemonte is experiencing a wine renaissance, thanks in part to current Castellengo owners Magda and Alessandro Ciccioni. Deftly balancing tradition with innovation, the Ciccionis are crafting beautiful, varietally correct wines that display a distinct sense of place.
Aged in concrete to showcase nebbiolo's gorgeous attributes and blended with 20% vespolina to add softness and floral aromatics, the 2022 Castello di Castellengo Rosso della Motta is the perfect "transition to Fall" red but really should be savored throughout the year. Medium-bodied, it has aromas of red fruits and roses leading to flavors of brambly red cherries laced with notes of tobacco and the merest hint of baking spice. A whiff of black pepper rounds out the palate on the finish, which is lifted by bright acidity.
