New World appellations that produce pinot noir are also great sources of gamay. It is no wonder; like pinot noir, gamay is native to cool-climate Burgundy and thrives in regions with similar climate and terroir.
The best gamays are made under the care of skilled craftsmen who let the terroir be the guiding force that determines the quality of the finished wines, and no one does this better than Byron Kosuge. Like with pinot noir, he is The Master.
A Davis, California native and son of a farmer/biochemist, Kosuge has farming in his blood and was drawn to winemaking. He cut his teeth at Saintsbury Winery in Carneros; he subsequently accepted several consulting gigs at various Sonoma wineries. He fell in love with the transformation of fruit into wine and has spent years painstakingly tending the vines under his care to that end. He has always strived to bring Old World, non-interventionist sensibility to winemaking, adapting traditional methods to modern, New World conditions. His relentless pursuit of excellence led him to open his own winery, where he has beautifully honed his craft.
The 2022 B.Kosuge Gamay Noir came from a warm season with a surprise heat wave near harvest, but the wine is amazingly lithe, racy, and fresh. Its bright red color is a harbinger of what awaits the palate: ripe red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, and pomegranates explode from the glass framed by juicy, vibrant acidity and a long, satisfying finish. This is a super, fun, easy-drinking yet compelling wine that you will remember long after you have emptied your glass.
