2019 was an exceptional vintage in Tuscany's Montalcino appellation (98 points, Wine Spectator) that brought forth powerful yet elegant Brunellos. "Consistent weather, warm days, cool nights, and well-timed rain resulted in pure, fruit-filled Brunellos that combine elegance and power; the top wines rival the best 2016s" (Wine Spectator).
Agostina Pieri and her son, Francesco Monaci, established Pieri in 1991 on land with enormous potential. Situated on the prized southern edge of Montalcino’s plateau overlooking the Maremma, the property has seven hectares planted to vineyards, with a full southern exposure that allows for consistent ripeness and balance in its old, low-vigor sangiovese clones. Grapes are harvested by hand and strictly sorted to eliminate substandard fruit. Fermentations take 25-30 days in vat and stainless steel before racking into large Slavonian oak casks and seasoned French demi-muids. (winey/importer notes)
The 2019 Agostina Pieri Brunello has heady aromas of red berries with undertones of tobacco and cedar. The palate is resplendent with flavors of dried cherries and red currants entwined with savory notes of leather, balsamic, and a touch of crushed herbs. The wine has well-integrated tannins, smooth texture, and balanced acidity, enhancing the fruit and secondary notes. The finish is long and complex, marked by a persistent minerality and lingering notes of red fruits.

91 points, Decanter:
"Overtones of vanilla give way to pungent fennel and sage. Belying Agostina Pieri’s warm, southerly location, the palate is midweight and airy. It is as equally perfumed as the nose exhibiting cherry blossom and jasmine atop redcurrant. Light, fine-grained tannins meet soft, citrussy acidity." (11/13/23)
