Introduction:
Podere Barbi is a family estate with roots going back to 1932, when founder Enzo Barbi established the winery in the hilltop village of Baschi in Umbria, just outside the Orvieto Classico zone. The Barbi family philosophy is grounded in the indigenous varieties of central Italy — Grechetto, Procanico, Verdello, Malvasia — and a commitment to expressing the distinctive character of the Orvieto terroir without over-intervention.
Terroir:
The Barbi vineyards sit at approximately 1,000 feet above sea level on hillside slopes at "I Poggi di Baschi," overlooking the Orvieto Classico zone, with southeast and southwest-facing exposures that maximize sunlight across the growing season. The soils are clay and limestone with notable marine sediment — scattered fossilized seashells throughout the vineyard beds, echoing the calcium-rich profiles of Chablis. Good airflow through the site minimizes disease and supports healthy vine balance, while the diurnal temperature swing between warm days and cool nights preserves the natural acidity and aromatic freshness that define this style of white wine.
Tasting notes:
The Barbi Secco Orvieto Classico has aromas of citrus, orchard, and stone fruits with accents of white flowers and wet stone. The palate is light-bodied and fresh, with flavors of white peach, lemon, and pear supported by crisp natural acidity. Citrus zest and subtle minerality appear on the finish along with faint almond note.
