Château Bourdieu is a 15th-century Right Bank estate in Côte de Blaye with 180 acres under vine. The soil, a mix of clay, limestone, and gravel, makes the land ideal for the cultivation of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc. Current owner Luc Schweitzer has been farming and crafting wine for decades; today, along with his sons Richard and Ludovic, he oversees every aspect of the winemaking process from bud break to bottling. Keeping yields low, meticulous sorting of the grapes, and temperature-controlled fermentation bring forth bright, full-bodied wines loaded with character.
The 2019 Château Bourdieu Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux is a blend of 87% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, and 3% cabernet franc from 25-year-old vines that is vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks in order to preserve the ebullient fruit characters. Aromas of black raspberries, cassis, and hints of pencil shavings lead to a full-bodied, silky-smooth palate that abounds with flavors of blackberries, cassis, and Damson plums layered with accents of cedar. Bright acidity preserves the fruit's juicy freshness; firm yet pliant tannins lend structure and balance.
