PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
The Dão is located in north central Portugal and is one of the oldest wine regions in the county. Situated on a plateau and surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges, the Dão is comprised of sandy, well-drained soils with schist and granite and has a climate characterized by cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. This terroir yields wines that are elegant, complex and well-balanced. Today's offering is a stellar representation of the wines that are coming out of this historic region.
The 2015 Quinta de Cabriz Dão Reserva is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, and Aragonez sourced from vineyards at an elevation of 400-700 meters. The vineyards are surrounded by pine forests which bring forth complex, terroir-influenced wines; time spent in oak barrels lends body and complexity as well. This full-bodied beauty abounds with aromas and flavors of blackberries, blueberries, and cassis. On the palate, this abundant fruit is entwined with woodsmoke; subtle notes of vanilla, herbs, plums, and cocoa unfold layer by layer. Moderate acidity brings the wine to a long finish. 92 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This popular range of wines has a serious side in the reserva. This structured and full-bodied blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Aragoñez is just approaching black fruit and tannin structured maturity. There is a fine dusty quality in the wine that has a ripe, perfumed aftertaste." (5/2020)
