One of Italy’s most storied wineries, Vallana nearly single-handedly put Alto Piemonte on the map with a series of iconic wines throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Nestled at the foot of Monte Rosa, where Alpine and Mediterranean influences converge, Alto Piemonte offers a distinctive expression of Nebbiolo - elegant, aromatic, and structured. Thanks to its acidic soils, some of which are of volcanic origin, the wines showcase firm backbone, minerality, and remarkable aging potential.*
Today, Marina and Francis Fogarty, the 4th-generation descendants of Antonio Vallana, are restoring the Vallana name to greatness by replanting the family's historic vineyards and marrying tradition with innovation. Like their ancestors, Marina and Francis often hold wines for years after bottling, yet charge prices similar to their neighbors' much younger wines.
The 2018 Vallana Campi Raudii Alto Piemonte is blended with 5% each of Uva Rara and Vespolina and is vinified in concrete tanks to showcase its fruit and terroir-driven characters. Medium-bodied, it has aromas of red fruits, leather, mint, and tobacco, followed by a palate of black cherries and brambly raspberries entwined with accents of cocoa, dried herbs, and wet stone. The several years of bottle age have allowed the tannins, primary, and secondary flavors to become seamlessly integrated, giving the wine a smooth texture and bringing it to a long finish.
