PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
This Villa Sparina Barbera del Monferrato DOC Piedmont, Italy is a light red wine, boasting aromas of wild blackberry, dark cherry, and a hint of tobacco. It has a pleasant acidity and tannic structure, with soft round tannins that give a velvety finish. Perfect for any occasion.
The Villa Sparina estate was purchased by Mario and Bruna Moccagatta in the late 1970s long before anyone could imagine how popular Italian white wine would become in the decades to follow.*
Their vineyards stretch over 70 hectares in the northern section of the Gavi appellation, which is situated in southern Piedmont. Here, the clay marl soils alternate with diluvial and gravelly soils, ideal for the production of richly flavored white wines with immense aging potential. Lying at altitudes between 800 and 1000 feet ASL, the vineyards benefit from the maritime influence of the Mediterranean, about an hour’s drive by car.*
The winery is known for its distinctive bottle shape. It was inspired by an old bottle that was discovered in the estate’s historic cellar.*
Today, Villa Sparina is run by Mario and Bruna's children, Stefano, Tiziana, and Massimo.
