PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Meaning “Well Born” in Spanish, Bien Nacido was planted on the historic site of the Rancho Tepusquet land grant, a plot of land that was granted to Tomás Olivera in 1837, when California was still a part of Mexico. The Olivera family’s adobe, built in 1857, still graces the estate today – a majestic sentinel looking after the vines.*

One of the oldest cool-climate estates in California and home of the world’s most single vineyard designations, Bien Nacido has been an acclaimed source of world-glass grapes and estate wine since its founding in 1973 by brothers Stephen and Bob Miller, whose vision was to develop a vineyard that would be acknowledged as among the elite vineyards of the world. Four years of hard work and sweat equity led to the original vineyard plantings – 300 acres of pinot noir and chardonnay – in 1973.*

Since then, under the Miller Family’s stewardship, Bien Nacido has become one of the most coveted sources of cool-climate chardonnay, pinot noir, and syrah in California, if not the world. The combination of remarkable terroir and an incredibly dedicated team who cares for the land enables Bien Nacido’s legacy of exceptional winemaking and grape-growing to further grow with each passing vintage.*

Sourced from five blocks of the Bien Nacido Estate Vineyard and aged for 18 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak, today's wine has intense aromas of black and red figs, Damson plums, and fruit leather surrounded by baking spice. Radicchio and pecan skin balance a fig pastry sweetness on the palate. It will only grow more complex in the bottle and will age beautifully through 2030 and beyond. *

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"I loved the nose on the 2020 Estate Pinot Noir, which offers a wild assortment of red and black berries, sappy herbs, flowers, iron, and exotic baking spices. These carry to a medium-bodied, concentrated, focused, age-worthy palate with beautiful depth of fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Give it a year or two and enjoy it over the following decade. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it only got better. It’s unquestionably a thrilling, brilliant wine." (8/22)

95 points, Robert Parker:
"The 2020 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from across the estate and was matured in about 30% new oak. Grapes were entirely destemmed this year. "I was really worried about smoke taint," winemaker Anthony Avila says. "It's said that you must discard all the green parts of the plant. It was the right choice, and I'd do it again." Instead of using whole clusters, "We kept our foot on the gas in terms of extraction," Avila explains. "We did more punch downs and longer pump overs." Medium ruby in color, the Bien Nacido Pinot Noir features intense aromas of cranberry sauce, blood orange, mushroom, tar, and forest floor with accents of cinnamon and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is super silky and loaded with sweet berry preserves. Its oak spices are well integrated, its acidity bright, and it finishes long and spicy." (12/22)

94 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Creamy while detailed aromas of black cherry, loam, and slate make for a very inviting and intriguing nose on this bottling. The palate lands with a bold richness, carrying fresh and vibrant flavors of black cherry and blackberry in a hedonistic vintage for this estate." (12/31/22)
