PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Founders Jerry & Joyce Cain initially purchased 550 acres of the historic McCormick Ranch on Spring Mountain in 1980. From the release of their very first vintage in 1976 until today, this family-owned and operated winery (now owned by Jim & Nancy Meadlock) has consistently been rated among THE great blue-chip properties in California. Chris Howell has been their chief winemaker since 1991. Cain Five is an exotic, one-of-a-kind wine modeled after the great wines of Bordeaux; the "Five" in the name refers to that iconic region's classic varietals: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, and malbec.

The primary feature that makes this wine special is its terroir; location is everything! Even on Spring Mountain, the Cain Vineyard is unique. Cradled in a bowl on the crest of the Mayacamas Range, vines are planted on exposures toward all points of the compass, at elevations ranging from 2100 feet down to 1400 feet, giving tremendous diversity within the vineyard. The well-drained soils here are almost all derived from sandstone, shale, and clay.

2017 brought forth a fresh and mouthwatering Cain Five. A blend of  46% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 21% cabernet franc, 5% malbec, and 2% petit verdot, it is a vibrant display of lovely perfume, succulent fruit characters, fresh natural acidity, and fine structure.

96 points, James Suckling:

"This is really firm and long with a solid core of tannins, earthy fruit, and firmness. Medium to full body. Serious structure and length. Juicy and savory. The tension and form are beautiful. Classic, traditional Napa." (2/3/22)
