PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
The Biondi Santi family is legend in Italian winemaking, with roots going back to the 1800s when Ferruccio Biondi Santi planted the first Montalcino vineyard with vines of a selected sangiovese clone called sangiovese grosso, otherwise known as brunello. His grandson, Franco Biondi Santi, was known as “The gentleman of Brunello”; he and Ferruccio are heralded as the inventors of one of Italy's most revered appellations, Brunello di Montalcino.

Back in the 1980s Ferruccio's great-grandson Jacopo bought an estate further south in the heart of the Maremma zone. He believed that Maremma’s forested terroir, with its coastal influences and wider day-to-night temperature variations, would make magic with the family's historic sangiovese clone. The magnificent wines of Castello di Montepo are a testament to his insight and talents. Today, winemaker Tancredi, Jacopo’s son, is at the helm of the estate and has been instrumental in endearing his cuvées to legions of wine lovers, including members of the press, from all over the world.

91 points, James Suckling:
"Expressive nose of balsamic, sour cherries, orange peel, dried roses, and spice box. Hints of cardamom and hazelnut. Firm, chalky tannins that spread across the palate, with a medium to full body and creamy, delicious finish. 30th-anniversary bottling." (7/3/23)

91 points, Robert Parker:
"Celebrating its 30th anniversary (1991-2021), the Castello di Montepò 2021 Sassoalloro is a selection of the special BBS-11 clone of Sangiovese from across the estate vineyards. The property measures 600 hectares and has 60 hectares of vines that have been carefully mapped and subdivided with help from the universities of Florence and Pisa. This wine offers a 360-degree view of the estate's winemaking philosophy with a fresh and accessible drinking style. There is plenty of cherry, wild berry, earthy mineral, and dried spice over a medium texture." (6/22/23)
