I have always said that I have never met a Barolo that I didn't like. Barolos are gorgeous, displaying the seamless integration of grape, terroir, and the winemaker's passion. However, there are a precious few Barolos that stand head and shoulders above the rest. These wines are incredible achievements that perfectly juxtapose brawn and grace as well as fruit and soil, with beguiling aromas and flavors that unfold layer after layer, leaving a lasting impression on your palate, mind, and soul that lasts for years. Today's offer is the absolute cream of the crop, and we were lucky enough to secure the only 24 bottles available in the state. 

The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the Marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. They have over 15 hectares of vineyards, all located within the Barolo appellation.*

The Monprivato vineyard is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, stretching over six hectares at 900 feet ASL. It is a historic vineyard, as is confirmed by old land registry archives dating back to 1666, and is one of eleven first-category historic vineyards in  Barolo.*

Monprivato's soil is composed of clayey-silty marl, with good structure, a high content of active limestone, and a well-proportioned supply of micro-elements. Together with the vineyard’s south-westerly exposure at midday, the vineyard provides the Barolo wine with excellent body, a subtle bouquet, delicate tar, a lingering aftertaste, an unmistakable, clear elegance, and the ability to evolve in a very positive way over time while maintaining extraordinary youth and freshness. Wines from this cru are only bottled in outstanding and excellent vintages.*

"The Giuseppe Mascarello 2018 Barolo Monprivato reveals an open and accessible personality. This wine is an immediate charmer. I tasted these wines with the Mascarello family seated across the table from me, and during our chat, they explained that this was a gratifying vintage in terms of farming and winemaking. The growing season was not too hot, and high alcohol levels were not an issue, they say. In the case of this wine, we are greeted with mild tannins and a pretty bouquet with delicate floral notes, smoke, and tar."
