PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Although he was born and raised an hour from Napa Valley, Charles didn’t discover his love for wine until he moved to Europe. While living abroad, he managed several rock bands. In 1999 he met a winemaker in Walla Walla, Washington who convinced him to start making his own wine true to his own story and vision. In 2001, he released 330 cases of his first vintage, and an icon was born.

While his initial offerings were value-based wines, he yearned to craft premium wines that were the highest expressions of varietal and Washington terroir. In 2006 he burst onto the high-end wine scene with the inaugural vintage of Royal City Syrah. Not only was this wine a smashing success with consumers, it earned a 100-point score, earning him the distinction of being one of only 4 Washington winemakers to earn a perfect rating from the press. Today, his brands are under the umbrella of House of Smith; all of his wines, regardless of price point, represent the very best in their genre.

Today's wine is crafted from 100% cabernet sauvignon sourced from the Powerline Vineyard, a 38-acre estate vineyard in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley, situated over 1200 feet ASL. The soils are well-drained, with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable, complex characters.* The wine was aged on the lees for 28 months in a 55/45 combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2019 Vineyard Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Powerline has a gorgeous perfume of red and black currants, iron, tobacco, and baking chocolate, with nicely integrated spicy oak in the background. Medium to full-bodied, finesse-driven, and incredibly elegant, it’s a gorgeous cabernet to drink over the coming 15 years or so." (6/14/23)

94 points, James Suckling:
"What an open cabernet sauvignon with an array of currants, orange zest, plums, anise, olives, sandalwood, and peaches on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with such purity of fruit. I like the peachy fragrance. Drink or hold." (5/24/23)
