Introduction: "Pomalo" is a Croatian word with no direct dictionary translation — it means to take it easy, slow down, no worries. That ethos defines this project entirely. Pomalo Wine Co. was created by the Begović cousins, two natural winemakers from opposite corners of the Balkans — one from the mountains of northeastern Slovenia, the other from the Dalmatian coast — who discovered their shared lineage through the village of Kozice, Croatia, and teamed up with US importer Vinum to bring authentic, minimal-intervention Croatian wines to the American market. The Frankovka Rosé is their signature summer wine, made from 100% Frankovka (the Croatian name for Blaufränkisch) grown in the Pannonian Basin of Slavonia in continental Croatia.
Terroir: The vineyards sit in Slavonija, the broad inland agricultural region of northern Croatia, in the Pannonian Basin at an elevation suited to slow, even ripening. The soils are pseudogley — a heavy, moisture-retentive clay profile with 5% humus — which moderates water stress and contributes to the wine's characteristic freshness and subtle mineral quality. The 16-year-old southwest-facing vines benefit from warm continental summers tempered by cooler nights, giving Frankovka the acidity and aromatic lift that make it such a compelling rosé grape.
Appearance: Pale salmon-pink with a bright, lively hue.
Nose: Floral and fruit-forward — fresh strawberry, raspberry, and cherry lead with rose petal, citrus zest, and a subtle herbal note. Clean, direct, and immediately inviting.
Palate: Light- to medium-bodied, crisp, and vibrant. Juicy red berry and cherry flavors are carried by a lively, refreshing acidity with a subtle spice character from the Frankovka grape and a light mineral thread on the mid-palate. The direct-press approach and spontaneous fermentation preserve the wine's natural freshness and character without any intervention-driven heaviness.
Finish: Clean and mineral-driven, with lingering red fruit, citrus zest, and a bright, mouthwatering close.
Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Grilled shrimp, fresh tuna, or herb-marinated chicken skewers.
🥦 Vegetarian: Light vegetable pasta, caprese salad, or grilled zucchini with fresh herbs.
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Fresh chèvre, mild sheep's milk cheese, prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, and marinated olives.
Overall Impression: A genuinely refreshing and personality-driven rosé from an underexplored corner of Europe, made with minimal intervention and an infectious sense of fun. The Frankovka grape's natural acidity and red fruit character make this one of Croatia's most compelling expressions of the variety in rosé form — bright, food-friendly, and built entirely for warm-weather enjoyment. Serve well-chilled at 45–48°F; drink now while young and vivid.
