Introduction:
Vinos de Arganza is a family-run winery established in 2000 in Toral de los Vados, at the southern edge of Villafranca del Bierzo, guided by highly regarded winemaker Víctor Robla. The Flavium Selección is their entry-level expression of Mencía — the indigenous red grape that has transformed Bierzo into one of Spain's most exciting wine regions over the past two decades. Named after the Roman settlement Flavium Brigantium, the label pays tribute to Bierzo's ancient viticultural roots.

Terroir:
Bierzo occupies a transitional zone in the northwest corner of Castilla y León where Atlantic and Mediterranean climates collide, sheltered by mountain ranges that temper both heat and rainfall. The region's defining soils — slate, schist, and granite on the hillside sites — give Mencía its characteristic graphite minerality and structural tension. Vinos de Arganza's vineyards sit on the valley floor and lower slopes around Toral de los Vados, where slate-rich, well-drained soils produce Mencía of vibrant fruit character and good natural acidity.

Tasting notes:
The 2021 Flavium Selección Mencía Bierzo has aromas of cherry compote, blackberries, and blueberries, with accents of tarragon, dried herbs, balsamic spice, and a hint of cedar oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky, smooth texture and mouthwatering juiciness. Pomegranates, red cherries, and plums are at the core, joined by thyme, dark chocolate, fennel, and a mineral thread that speaks clearly of the slate soils. Tannins are slightly firm but rounded and integrate well with the fruit. The cedar oak is subtle, allowing  Mencía's natural aromatic vibrancy to shine. The finish is persistent and flavorful, with a lasting herbal and mineral echo and a dry, slightly savory close.

Press:
93 points, Wine Enthusiast:
"Dark-black-cherry in color, this wine has aromas of Chambord, cherry cola and tarragon. It opens with bright notes of pomegranate and cranberry that are joined by thyme, dark-chocolate and fennel-pollen flavors. Slightly stiff tannins melt into a lasting finish."

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Roasted lamb chops with herbs, slow-smoked pork ribs, or grilled chorizo with peppers.
🥦 Vegetarian: Mushroom and lentil stew, roasted eggplant with smoked paprika, or a hearty Spanish tortilla.
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Manchego, Idiazábal, chorizo ibérico, Castelvetrano olives, and roasted almonds.

Overall Impression: A reliably well-made, fruit-forward Bierzo red that showcases why Mencía has captured the attention of value-hunters worldwide. Fresh, vibrant, and genuinely representative of the region's character at a very fair price. Drink now through 2026 while the fruit is at its most vivid. Serve at 60–63°F; no decanting required.
