PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Located in the sub-region of Rioja Baja in the town of Alfaro, Bodegas Ilurce is owned and operated by the fourth generation of the Escudero family. They have grown grapes in Rioja Baja since 1940; the current generation has 60 hectares of vineyards that are planted in alluvial soils on the slopes of the Monte Yerga. The vines range from century-old, head-trained garnacha to high-density plantings of graciano and tempranillo planted in alluvial, limestone-heavy soils with a high abundance of stones. Located 2000 feet above sea level, the vineyards benefit from very cold winters and nights, combined with warm summers – perfect conditions for fruit that deftly balances ripeness with acidity.*
Today's rosado is crafted from 100% garnacha and is made in the saignée method, which involves “bleeding” off a portion of red wine juice after it’s been in contact with the skins and seeds, then making it into wine. Fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, it is resplendent on the nose and palate with ripe, red fruits - cherries, strawberries, and pomegranates - with hints of stony minerality and vibrant acidity that bring it to a long finish. 91 points, "Best Value", Tim Atkin Rioja Report 2022:
“Ana Escudero's rosado is rightly regarded as one of the best and most consistent in Rioja, sourced from the family's garnacha vineyards in Alfaro. Intensely scented, fresh, and well balanced, with the focus on sappy, tangy strawberry and pomegranate flavors,
a hint of tannins, and a vibrant, unoaked finish."
