PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Corpinnat is the name of the new DO in Penedès, Catalonia, Spain made up of a group of artisanal producers whose wines formerly were in the DO of Cava. As you know, Cava is the appellation that produces Spain’s eponymous bubbles. Cava has become so popular that the DO includes both large-scale and smaller producers - some outside of Penedès - that together make over 250 million bottles per year. There is nothing official that distinguishes the “very good but priced for everyday” quaffs from the really, really good, special occasion-worthy stuff, so the Corpinnat DO was born.

Corpinnat, which can be loosely translated to “the heart of Penedès” is where you will find the absolute cream of the crop of Spanish bubbles. Wines in this DO must be made from a minimum of 90% indigenous varietals and all must be organically grown and hand-harvested. Grapes must be vinified on the winery property and must be aged for a minimum of 18 months before being released into the market. Corpinnat bubbles are the real deal that will satisfy the palates of the most discerning sparkling wine enthusiasts.

The Llopart family has been farming in Penedès since the late 14th century and dedicated themselves to the cultivation of grapevines, wheat, and olive trees up until the late 1800’s, when they committed themselves wholly to grape growing. After years of hard work, the family finally released their first Cava, produced in the estate’s old masia, or country house, in 1887. The Lloparts were one of 9 families in the area spearheading the establishment of the Corpinnat DO.

The 2016 Llopart Brut nature Corpinnat Reserva is a gorgeous introduction to this new DO. Made in the “methode champenois” like all sparklers in the area, it is a reserva crafted from native varietals Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parrellada that was aged for 36 months in the bottle after the secondary fermentation. Its “brut nature” designation means that zero dosage is added so as not to distract from the wines’ natural fruit characters and terroir.

90 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
Another outstanding sparkling wine from this estate, the 2016 Brut Nature Reserva is based on 45% Xarel·lo, 35% Macabeu, and 20% Parellada that was fermented in tank before seeing secondary fermentation in bottle, staying on lees for 30 months. Lots of exotic flowers, honeyed tangerines, and some toasty, lees notes all define the bouquet, and it's a layered, medium-bodied, mouthfilling wine that has solid overall balance. (10/21/20)
