PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
World-renowned importer and consulting winemaker Jorge Ordóñez is Toro’s most important modern pioneer and the man behind today’s spectacular wine. When Jorge first traveled to Toro in 1991 there were only five cooperative wineries, but there were acres of incredible pre-phylloxera vineyards planted on their original rootstock. In 1995, Jorge traveled to Toro with the Eguren family of Rioja; in 1997 they established Bodegas Numanthia. They sold the estate in 2007 and Jorge founded Bodegas Ordóñez.* Today’s offer is the bodega’s crowning glory.

The 2016 Vatan is made of 100% Tempranillo from 100-year-old ungrafted vines planted in soil that consists of sandy, sedimentary loam dating back to the end of the Cretaceous period. These are the oldest soils in the Spanish Duero River Valley. Due to these sandy soils, Toro was the only continental Spanish DO to completely resist phylloxera.* Bodegas Ordóñez exclusively works with ungrafted, phylloxera-resistant vineyards and farms organically. The Vatan is barrel-fermented and aged in oak for 24 months.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
“Showing even better than when I tasted it last year, the 2016 Vatan (100% Tinta de Toro) is still a baby and sports a deep purple color as well as blockbuster notes of blackcurrants, melted licorice, violets, ground pepper, and earth. It starts out tight and backward on the palate but slowly opens with air. It’s full-bodied, opulent, and powerful, yet still stays light on its feet, balanced, and lively. It still needs another 2-3 years and is going to evolve for 15-20 years or more.” (10/21/20)

93 points, Wine Spectator:
“Firm and dense, this red delivers rich flavors of blackberry, fig, cocoa, licorice and mineral, set in a thick texture, supported by well-integrated tannins and kept lively by balsamic acidity. Savory, even austere, yet harmonious and complete. Best from 2022 through 2036.” (9/30/20)
