PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
One of only two Spanish wine regions to hold the country's top-tier DOCa classification (similar in prestige to Italy's DOCG designation), the Priorat has a terroir ideal for grape cultivation: a hot, dry climate, wide diurnal temperature variations, and soil, known as llicorella, which is made from partially decomposed slate and quartz.
Today's wine is a new custom cuvée from importer and consulting winemaker extraordinaire Eric Solomon. Coster dels Olivers is a blend of carinyena, garnacha, and cabernet sauvignon. A combination of younger vine fruit, a relatively cooler northwestern exposure of the vineyards, a high percentage of carinyena, and 12 months of aging in well-seasoned French and Hungarian oak barrels, ensures a brighter and juicier style of Priorat made for immediate enjoyment.
Medium to full-bodied, the 2020 Coster dels Olivers abounds with ripe black cherries, black raspberries, and cassis on the nose and palate. Accents of bramble, savory herbs, and a whiff of black pepper add complexity and depth. Firm yet pliant tannins add structure, while bright acidity keeps it light on its feet.
