Lirac wines are comparable in style to those from Châteauneuf-du-Pape because they share similar climate and soil, which is characterized by galets, or large stones that retain the heat of the sun and help to ripen the grapes. Domaine Maby is a family-owned estate that dates back to the early 19th century and is based in Tavel. The winery began to reach its full potential in the 1960s when it expanded its vineyard holdings into the region of Lirac. Today, Domaine Maby has 60 hectares of vineyards in Tavel, Lirac, and Côtes du Rhône that are sustainably farmed in order to protect the environment and to ensure the purest expression of terroir in its finished wines.
The "La Fermade" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah sourced from vines with an average age of 39 years. Stainless-steel fermented and aged, it is medium-to-full-bodied, with a nose of black fruits and herbs de Provence that leads to a palate of cassis, black cherry, baking spice, and an undercurrent of wet stone.
89-91 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2017 Lirac La Fermade is a fresh, upfront charmer that has impressive black and blue fruits, peppery herbs, and violet notes as well as a hint of graphite with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, and with outstanding purity of fruit, it’s going to be a rock-solid purchase that will keep for 4-5 years." (8/28/18)
