PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
I Greppi was founded on the Tuscan coast in 2001 by two of Tuscany’s most famous winemaking families, the Cancellieris and Landinis. The estate stretches over 14 hectares planted a stone’s throw from the Bolgheri coastline in the spiritual homeland of the Super Tuscan movement. The farm’s proximity to water creates the ideal conditions for extended ripening: Ventilation from the sea helps to cool the fruit during the summer months and keeps the grape bunches dry and healthy (free from mildew or rot). Biodiversity among the vines is bolstered by the presence of two human-made lakes on the estate. Not only do they help to increase the presence of insects and other animals, but they also help to cool the vineyards in summer.*
Aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak barrels, the Greppicante is a blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and Cabernet Franc (40%) made in the classic Super Tuscan style* It offers a panoply of aromas and flavors; cassis, blackberry, and black raspberry dominate, with accents of brambly earth, rosemary, tobacco, and saddle leather adding complexity. Firm tannins and moderate acidity give the wine structure and balance. Check out the press!
92 points, James Suckling:
"Notes of black fruit, spices, and mushrooms on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Chewy and structured with a fine-grain texture on the palate. Nice length." (6/9/21)
91 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2019 Greppicante from I Greppi is ripe with aromas of licorice, preserved black cherry, and cedar. It is juicy and broad, with silky fine tannins and warming spice, offering notes of mocha, black plum, and turned earth. It is drinking well now and will drink well over the next 6 or so years."
