PRODUCT OVERVIEW / REVIEW:

Passopisciaro's "Passorosso" Etna Rosso DOC 2020 is a balanced, medium-bodied red wine from Sicily, Italy. It features notes of wild berries, plums, savory herbs, and licorice, complemented by earthy and mineral notes. Enjoy its smooth finish and classic Sicilian style.

Mt. Etna is Europe's most active live volcano and rises 11,014 feet above the sea. Andrea Franchetti arrived there in 2000 and helped to initiate the renaissance of viticulture on the mountain, which brought international interest to the region. One of the first incomers to see the potential of the ancient lava-strewn vineyards on the flanks of Etna, he was also among the first to recognize the potential of individual terroirs composed of distinct lava flows.*

Franchetti's Passopisciaro winery sits at about 3200 feet above the small wine town of the same name on the northern slope of the volcano. A real innovator, he is credited with putting no fewer than two Italian fine-wine regions on the map. Franchetti had also previously created a Tuscan wine estate in the Val d’Orcia on the border of Lazio and Umbria in a vast, open valley overlooked by Monte Amiata by planting cuttings from Bordeaux. His first vintage of wine at this estate in 1997, named the Tenuta di Trinoro, made him an instant success.*

Andrea Franchetti has made nine different types of wines at Passopisciaro, with six focused fully on the grape nerello mascalese, wines that are all notably precise and expressive of their single-contradas (vineyard sites), writes Master of Wine Jancis Robinson.*

Today's wine is crafted from 100% nerello mascalese sourced from different altitudes and soil types. It is a holistic expression of the breadth of flavors that Etna can produce with a character that distills this unique growing environment in a glass, reflecting the variations of each vintage. The wine ages in large, neutral oak barrels and is unfiltered, presenting an interpretation of nerello mascalese that is bright, pure, red-fruited, mineral, and herbaceous. With age, it begins to lose its color and gains exotic aromas of camphor, sandalwood, and spice. The first vintage was in 2001. Starting with the 2014 vintage, Passorosso has been designated Etna Rosso DOC.*

91 points, Decanter:
"Old bush-vine Nerello Mascalese blended from several crus on the north side of Etna at various altitudes. The nose of sweet strawberry and fragrant cherry and raspberry is joined by some black and white pepper. There's great concentration in the mouth, with a rich texture to the soft tannins, and tangy red fruits accompany vivid, gum-tingling acidity to ensure not a single degree of the 14.5% alcohol seems out of place. The long finish displays some dark chocolate, tobacco, and wood notes. Drinking Window 2020-2026." (8/19/20)
