Colli Senesi extends from the hills of Siena to the town of San Gimignano. This extensive area is the largest Chianti sub-zone and is known for the production of fragrant, easy-to-drink wines.
Located between Pienza and Montepulciano on the Strada del Chianti (dei Colli Senesi), Tenuta Santo Pietro’s 72-acre estate was part of a larger farm system laid out by Pope Pius II in the mid-1400s. Today it is a self-sufficient gentleman’s farm with twelve acres of vineyards and twelve acres of olive trees. The property was purchased in 2006 by the Savignano family, who undertook extensive renovations of the villa and the vineyards.*
The property now includes 12 acres of old and new growth vines of Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grapes. Approximately 1,800 cases of wine are produced per year. The family takes pride in the small production of the highest quality wine they can make on-site in their newly completed winery.*
The 2025 "Pio II" is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes aged for 6 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. This is done to preserve the freshness and bouquet of the fruit while softening and refining the tannins. Indeed, this wine is plush, soft, and well-integrated, with aromas of brambly red fruits and a medium-to-full-bodied palate of dusty red cherries and raspberries accented with hints of forest floor and savory herbs. Balancing, moderate acidity brings the wine to a satisfying, fruit-tinged finish.
