The Badia a Coltibuono estate is led by the fifth generation of family members: Emanuela, Paolo, and Roberto Stucchi Prinetti. There are 150 acres of vineyards on the property. Sangiovese is naturally the most important grape variety planted. However, the family honors Chianti’s heritage by planting significant numbers of other traditional varieties that are allowed but often omitted in Chianti Classico: Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda, Malvasia Nera, Mammolo, Pugnitello, and Sanforte (as well as Trebbiano and Malvasia for Vin Santo). From these building blocks, Badia a Coltibuono makes a robust range of wines from the traditional to the innovative.*
The 2013 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva has aromas of blackberries, Marasca cherries, and dried fruits layered with undertones of tilled soil, new leather, chopped mint, tobacco, and ground clove. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with flavors of ripe plums, wild cherries, and savory, woodsy notes. The wine has well-integrated tannins and a persistent finish, with lingering impressions of spice, tobacco, and dark fruit characters.

93 points, Wine Spectator:
"Leather, fading cherry, spice, woodsy and iron notes highlight this red. Balanced and solidly built, in a traditional style, with a long, densely structured aftertaste. Drink through 2035."
92 points, James Suckling:
"This Chianti Classico shows dried cherries and almonds with hints of tangerine. Medium body, firm tannins, and a bright finish. Attractive orange at the end, too."
91 points, Wine Enthusiast:
"Aromas of iris, tilled soil, new leather, chopped mint and ground clove take shape in the glass. The vibrant, austere palate delivers Marasca cherry, cranberry, espresso and a toasted note while a hint of tobacco marks the close. Close-grained tannins provide assertive support. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 2021–2031."
