ntroduction:
The 2020 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is a benchmark expression of Amarone that balances richness, structure, and elegance with remarkable precision. From one of Valpolicella’s most historic producers, this wine showcases the intensity born of appassimento while maintaining freshness, clarity, and finesse. The 2020 vintage highlights Allegrini’s refined, modern interpretation of Amarone—powerful yet composed, luxurious yet food-worthy.

Terrior:
The fruit originates from hillside vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico zone, particularly around Fumane, where calcareous and marl-rich soils lend structure and mineral definition. Elevation and exposure provide excellent airflow, essential for healthy grapes destined for drying. The continental climate, moderated by nearby Lake Garda, allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while preserving acidity. These factors, combined with Allegrini’s meticulous vineyard selection, produce Amarone of depth, balance, and terroir transparency.

Appearance:
Deep garnet with a nearly opaque core and subtle brick-red reflections at the rim. Dense and luminous, signaling concentration and maturity.

Nose:
Complex and opulent, offering aromas of dried cherry, black fig, and plum compote. Layers of cocoa, dark chocolate, sweet spice, tobacco, and dried herbs unfold alongside hints of licorice and balsamic nuance, gaining depth with aeration.

Palate:
Full-bodied and velvety, with a luxurious mouthfeel balanced by vibrant acidity. Concentrated flavors of dried red and black fruits are interwoven with notes of espresso, baking spice, bitter cocoa, and subtle earth. Tannins are firm yet polished, providing structure without heaviness, while alcohol is seamlessly integrated.

Finish:
Long, warming, and persistent, with lingering dried fruit, spice, and a gently savory bitterness. The finish remains fresh and balanced, underscoring both power and elegance.

Food Pairings:

  • Meat: Braised beef short ribs; venison stew; lamb shank with rosemary

  • Vegetarian: Mushroom and truffle risotto; lentil and walnut ragù; aged balsamic-glazed root vegetables

  • Charcuterie Board: Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano; Pecorino; speck; dark chocolate with sea salt

Overall Impression:
Uniting its limestone-driven Valpolicella Classico terroir, inky garnet appearance, layered dried-fruit and spice aromatics, plush yet structured palate, and long, harmonious finish, the 2020 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a refined, age-worthy Amarone. Best enjoyed with rich, savory dishes—or savored slowly on its own—it exemplifies balance, polish, and enduring Italian craftsmanship.

95 points, Vinous:  "The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is surprisingly lifted and airy in the glass, showcasing bright strawberry and cherry tones complemented by nuances of cedary spice. It is juicy in style, with silken textures and masses of ripe red and blue fruits that coast along a stream of cooling acidity. This vintage communicates refinement through the long and structured finale, coming across as savory with excellent length. Beautifully done."

94 points, James Suckling:  "A bold interpretation of Amarone. Refined aromas of licorice, dried cherries, camphor, and menthol reverberate across a compact, dense mid-palate. At this early stage, the tannins feel largely oak-derived. But there is nothing blunt about them, and there is ample mineral infusion and freshness. Bottle age will serve this rich Amarone well, placating the primary fruit while transforming the wine into something far more complex."

94 points, Wine Enthusiast: "Opening with aromas of ripe black plums, dusted with candied violet petals, espresso, and a distinct crushed chalk minerality. The palate is voluminous, as dried black cherries, black tea, and savory herbal flavors rush to meet the roasted coffee bean and licorice root notes on the compelling finish."

93 points, Wine Spectator: "An elegant red, with a supple texture and a frame of fine-grained tannins, this offers a generous core of plumped black cherry and warm fig. Shows notes of pomegranate seed, mocha, vanilla, and spiced orange peel animated by bright, plum skin acidity. Long and creamy on the aromatic herb- and graphite-laced finish."
