PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Fontodi has belonged to the Manetti family since 1968 and is a certified organic estate extending over 130 hectares, with 70 under vine. The family practices agriculture inspired by the principles of respect for nature and sustainability. Going beyond organic farming, they maximize the internal resources of the estate, thereby reducing the need for any external input. Respecting the environment means better wines that are purer expressions of grape and terroir.

Armed with a profound knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the zone of Panzano, Giovanni Manetti set his sights on Lamole, a forgotten corner of the zone with sandy soils and an altitude of 2000 feet above sea level. Here, the nights are very cool, which extends the area's growing season and brings forth wines with enhanced aromatics. He convinced a cousin, Lorenzo Socci, to work with him on seven hectares of vines at a property called Filetta. Together they restored the vines to health, and by 2014 were ready to pick their first grapes.

Because the wines from Filetta are lighter, Giovanni ages them in large oak casks, in contrast to the barriques he uses at Fontodi. Made solely from Sangiovese, it has a Pinot Noir-like clarity in both the glass and on the nose. It has a lifted, dark cherry fragrance yielding to intense yet elegant fruit on the palate, all supported by fine, grainy tannins. (importer/winery notes)

2015:

95 points, James Suckling:
The purity of fruit here really makes an impression on you. The nose shines with freshly picked blackcurrants, dark plums, freshly cut herbs, cinnamon, raspberry cheesecake, glazed cherries, orange and lemon rind. The palate is so well-crafted with a silky ball of tannins surrounded by layers of blue and red fruit and enveloping acidity. A long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

93 points, Wine Spectator:
Rich, packed with cherry, leather, dark chocolate and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and vibrant, with a long, mouthwatering finish that picks up a graphite edge. Best from 2020 through 2032.

2018:

95 points, James Suckling:
"Complex aromas of sweet berries, tobacco, and mushrooms with some floral undertones. Full-bodied with very tight, polished tannins and cedar, mahogany, and dark fruit on the finish. Lots of transparent fruit at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (6/30/21)

92 points, Vinous:
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is pliant and super-expressive. In this vintage, the Lamole has a touch more textural richness than in the past, which is quite inviting. Dark cherry, plum, spice, and lavender build to a silky, perfumed finish. The 2018 spent 18 months in cask. It's a gorgeous effort from the Manetti family." (9/21)
