PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Winemaker Andy Erickson spent years honing his craft at some of the most prestigious estates in California - Merryvale, Dalle Valle, Mayacamas, and Staglin, to name a few - and eventually landed the sweet job of head winemaker at cult winery Screaming Eagle. This was a crowning achievement of an illustrious career and a testament to Andy's phenomenal talents, as Screaming Eagle routinely fetches 4 figure prices per bottle.

Currently, Andy Erickson is the proprietor, along with his wife, Annie Favia, of Favia Wines. Leviathan is an offshoot of this endeavor, and it was borne out of Andy's desire to create wines unencumbered by the rules of making wines that fit AVA guidelines. Without these restrictions, Andy is able to make a wine with a blend of varietals and vineyards sites that best represents the vintage.

The 2019 Leviathan Proprietary Red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon from Moon Mountain, Red Hills, and Fountaingrove; merlot from Coombsville, syrah from Fountaingrove and the Sierra Foothills; petite sirah from Red Hills and Moon Mountain; and cabernet franc from Moon Mountain. It "boasts an intense mix of fresh boysenberry, black cherry, and plum with cocoa powder, allspice, and nutmeg. Its earthy elements of rocky California hillsides include bay laurel, sage, cedar, and dry red earth, which speaks to its origins. Supple and balanced tannins of this rich wine lead to a long, savory finish with hints of graphite and star anise. It is approachable now and is built to cellar." (winemaker notes)

95 points, James Suckling:
"Very pure fruit this year with ripe raspberries and fresh currants throughout. Full-to medium-bodied with soft, polished tannins and bright, clean fruit...Subtle and vivid fruit at the end. Yet, it can improve with age. Blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petite verdot. Drink or hold." (10/5/21)

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
Always a value, the 2019 California Red Wine is a juicy, up-front, undeniably delicious red with plenty of red, black, and blue fruits as well as graphite, leafy herbs, and chalky mineral nuances. Medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and seamless, it's a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming 8-10 years at a minimum. Best After 2022." (12/21/21)

92 points, Vinous:
"The 2019 Leviathan is a fabulous wine from Andy Erickson. Powerful and flamboyant, but somehow not overdone, the 2019 is packed with inky dark red fruit. Blood orange, spice, and floral accents add just enough lift to keep things balanced. I very much like the energy here." (1/22)
