The Gran Passione, a blend of corvina and merlot, is crafted in the tradition of “Apassimento” (to dry and shrivel), the same style as Amarone, the very expensive and iconic wines of the Veneto. This technique has its roots in an ancient past dating back to the Roman era. Over the centuries, this technique of “drying” the grapes before crushing has been honed, resulting in this unique expression of northern Italy.*
The grapes for today's wine are hand-selected and harvested at the beginning of October to achieve the highest sugar content. After drying on the vines for about 15 days, they are pressed and the fermentation starts; the skins are left in the must for a period to extract and intensify the flavors. The wine is then staged in oak vats for about 3 or 4 months;* this restrained use of oak adds complexity without making it too heavy, and all those generous fruit characters take center stage on the palate.
The 2022 Gran Passione has aromas of black fruits with hints of mocha and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied and lushly textured, with flavors of blackberries, black cherries, and figs layered with subtle notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and sweet baking spices. Pliant tannins and moderate acidity give the wine structure, balance, and depth.
