Claude Manciat started out as a winegrower who sold his fruit to negotiants, but began to bottle his own wine in the early 1980s. With his marriage to Simone Poncet came an expansion: his vineyards in Charnay just outside of Mâcon, and his wife’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé, became Domaine Manciat-Poncet. With only 12 hectares under vine, this is still an artisanal operation and has remained so under the care of Marie-Pierre Manciat, Claude and Simone’s daughter, who took over the reins in 2003.
The 2023 Domaine Manciat-Poncet Mâcon-Charnay Les Chênes is sourced from the estate's 40- to 60-year-old vineyards, with soils of chalky limestone and clay, outside of the village of Charnay. Vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aged on the lees for added depth and complexity, it has aromas of green apples and citrus zest with floral undertones. The palate is medium-bodied, with ebullient flavors of white peaches and lemons, flinty minerality, and bright acidity that carries the fruit to a long finish.
