Domaine Thevenard was established in 1918, when Claudius Lafarge returned from World War I, settled in Uchizy and planted Chardonnay plots that are still in production today. The Thevenards farmed and bottled their own wines until 1967, when a tragic accident forced the family to join the local cooperative. However, through the years their vineyard holdings remained intact, and in 2020, fifth generation brothers Matthieu and Gaétan withdrew 12 hectares from the local cooperative and begin estate bottling again.*

Matthieu began his journey by honing his craft at the side of Jean-Marie Guffens, the very vigneron who brought the world's attention to the Mâconnais as a region capable of producing world-class Chardonnays. After spending eight subsequent years at Maison Alex Gambal, he brought his expertise to the land his family has worked for over a century.*

Today, Matthieu and Gaétan craft wines from their own land as well as other vineyards sites in the Mâconnais, including the great “Les Genièvres.”

“Les Genièvres” is located in the southern part of the Mâconnais. Situated 650-800 feet above sea level, with 40-60-year-old vines, excellent sun exposure, and well-drained soils of clay and limestone, it brings forth complex, compelling wines. The Thevenard’s non-interventionist approach to winemaking allows this magnificent terroir be fully expressed.

The 2023 Domaine Thevenard Mâcon-Lugny "Les Genièvres" has aromas of white flowers, lemon verbena, and wet stone followed by a lushly-textured palate of lemon zest, apples, and honeysuckle laced with subtle notes of brioche and savory herbs. The wine is infused with bright, balancing acidity that brings it to a long, citrus-tinged finish.
