PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Soave Classico is the hilly area in the Veneto where vineyards were planted during Roman times. It is uniquely suited for developing white wine with its volcanic soil: pure basaltic lava, the only area with these particular characteristics in Italy. The area was originally planted with the ancient āGraecanicumā (coming from Greece) variety. This name was then transformed into āGarganegaā in the local dialect. During the ā60s Giuseppe Inama, the estateās founder, began purchasing small plots of vineyards in the heart of the Soave Classico. His idea was to assemble only top-quality vineyards of old-vine Garganega, and fashion from them a wine capable of restoring Soaveās reputation. Today this property sits on 30 hectares. (winery notes)
Third generation brothers Matteo, Alessio, and Luca are the current caretakers and winemakers; they have built upon the solid foundation of their forebears by embracing tradition while at the same time undertaking new practices such as precision agriculture, a system that involves analyzing the chemical makeup of the soils in order to obtain the highest expression of the grapes and terror in their finished wines. Adherence to organic farming, low yields, and the encouragement of biodiversity in the vineyards have resulted in fruit with thicker and more aromatic skins. The success of these methods is evident in all of their cuvƩes.
Today's wine is rich and round, with aromas of baked apples, pineapples, and a touch of chamomile. The fruits are dominant on the lush yet dry palate. That volcanic soil is beautifully expressed via hints of flinty minerality that weave through the fruit characters. The wine finishes long, with a very subtle hint of almonds.Ā
92 points, James Suckling:
"A lavish bouquet of Provencal herbs greets your nose. It really is like walking around a street market in Nice. Other nuances are apple and mineral-based. Medium-to full-bodied with intense balance of perfumed, saline minerals and persistent fruit that gives a tasty finish. The interest never flags here."
