Introduction:
The 2020 Barolo from Giacomo Borgogno & Figli is a classic and traditionally styled expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most historic estates. Known for its commitment to long macerations and extended aging, Borgogno crafts Barolo with structure, aromatic depth, and longevity at the forefront, offering a wine that balances power with precision.

Terrior:
Sourced from vineyards within the Barolo DOCG, the wine reflects the region’s calcareous marl soils and elevated hillside exposures. Warm days promote full ripeness, while cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic lift. These conditions produce Nebbiolo with firm tannins, pronounced aromatics, and remarkable aging potential.

Appearance:
Medium garnet with ruby reflections and a translucent rim, showing Nebbiolo’s characteristic clarity and youthful intensity.

Nose:
Complex and lifted, offering aromas of rose petal, tar, red cherry, and dried raspberry layered with hints of orange peel, licorice, tobacco, and subtle earthy spice. Mineral undertones reflect the limestone-rich soils.

Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with firm, gripping tannins balanced by vibrant acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, and red currant unfold alongside notes of leather, tea leaf, and savory herbs. The texture is powerful yet precise, emphasizing elegance over opulence.

Finish:
Long and persistent, finishing with lingering red fruit, floral notes, and a firm tannic backbone that signals excellent aging potential.

Food Pairings:

  • Meat: Braised beef, osso buco, truffle-infused dishes

  • Vegetarian: Mushroom risotto, polenta with wild mushrooms, lentils with herbs

  • Charcuterie Board: Aged Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto, cured salumi

Overall Impression:
This 2020 Borgogno Barolo beautifully synthesizes Barolo’s limestone-driven terroir, Nebbiolo’s aromatic complexity, and the estate’s traditional winemaking philosophy. Structured, floral, and age-worthy, it pairs exceptionally well with rich meats and earthy dishes while offering significant potential for cellaring.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"A deeper ruby/red color, the 2020 Barolo comes from the same vineyards as the No Name as well as Annunziata and offers more depth and ripeness, with aromas of black raspberries, candied cherries, preserved flowers, sweet herbs, and mossy earth. It has outstanding ripeness and purity and is long on the palate, with all its components coming together, delivering warmth, structure, and freshness. This is a pretty serious wine, one of the best blended wines I’ve tasted in this vintage, and it’s going to be hard to beat."
