"Farmer Fizz" or "Grower Champagne" are terms that some wine industry professionals affectionately dubbed Champagnes that are produced by the estates that actually cultivated and fermented the grapes. While this practice may seem commonplace, in Champagne only about 5% of bubbles are made this way; the vast majority are crafted with grapes sourced from other vineyards. What the French call "Récoltant Manipulant" Champagnes are very special because they reflect the distinct terroir as well as the particular winemaking style of the estate.
Established in 1919, Dekeyne & Fils is a five-hectare, family-owned estate in Bethon, a village in an area known as “La Voglonière”. Dedicated to crafting wines that reflect their origins, the family has always let the terroir be the guiding force that determines the characters of their finished wines. To that end, current caretakers and brothers Gael and Baptiste have worked to receive organic and biodynamic certification for their vineyards to enhance the purity of fruit and terroir expression in their cuvées.
The 2018 "Vogloniers" is a blend of 50% old-vine chardonnay, 40% young-vine chardonnay , and 10% pinot noir. fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and bottling was done in the spring. The Champagne remained “sur-lattes” in their cellar for approximately three years before disgorgement. The dosage of 4g is prepared with cane sugar. The Dekeynes then age their Champagnes for another year before release. (importer notes)
The 2018 "Vogloniers" has aromas of apples, white peaches, and lemon zest, with hints of wet stone and subtle floral notes. The palate is rich and full, with flavors of citrus fruits, apricots, and apples laced with hints of brioche, honeysuckle, and wet stone undercut by vibrant acidity.
